Coronavirus COVID-19

We have been following the Coronavirus outbreak closely. We understand people are concerned and as the situation evolves, we are continuing to follow advice from the Scottish GovernmentNHS Scotland, and the National Association of Funeral Directors, and will continue to take every precaution

Our offices remain open as usual, and we have taken a number of additional steps to ensure the high standard of service we provide is maintained.

We are able to arrange funeral services remotely via telephone, email, etc.  To reassure you, you will of course still receive the same level of care and attention we always provide.

  • We will continue to listen to the latest Government advice and adjust what we do and how we do it accordingly.
  • We will continue to look after the person who has died with the utmost dignity, and have put steps in place in order to do this safely.
  • It may be difficult for some people to be able to attend funeral services due to travel restrictions, so it is possible to have funeral services live streamed/webcast.
  • It may become necessary to arrange direct cremation and direct burial services with us. This is where a person is cremated or buried without a service and with no mourners in attendance.
  • We can help to arrange meaningful memorial services at a later date, and we are more than happy to talk you through different options when you are ready.

If you would like to talk to us, please call 01698 263 115 anytime of the day or night.

Frequently Ask Questions

Can I still arrange a funeral?

Yes, we are still arranging funerals, we are here to help you whenever you need us 24 hours a day on 0800 996 1927.

We would prefer to make the funeral arrangements over the telephone given the current conditions.

If you would like, we can arrange to collect any required paperwork clothing or any items you would like to include with your loved one, just let us know.

If you would like to visit one of our funeral homes, we would ask you to call us in advance to ensure there are no other families due to attend, and there is a maximum of two people present. Presently we are unable to visit you at home.

I am self-isolating but need to arrange a funeral?

We can e-mail and/or post all forms and documents to you which are necessary to make the funeral arrangements.

Can I still spend time with my loved one in your chapel of rest?

At this time, you can continue to visit your loved one in our care. We ask that only immediate family or close friends do this, and that there is a maximum of two visitors to the funeral home at any one time.

This is to comply with government advice to keep gatherings down to small numbers. Please call in advance of your visit so we can ensure we limit the number of visitors to the funeral home.

How have funeral services changed?

We need to follow the advice issued by the government, it is likely that funerals carried out at this time will not be how you, or the person who has died would originally have wanted. We want to reassure you that we will do everything we can to help you to say goodbye.

To maintain our levels of care to clients and colleagues, unfortunately there are number of changes that we have to make to our services:

  • The Church of Scotland and Catholic Diocese have stopped taking services or are closed until further notice, which means we can no longer include a church service in funeral arrangements.
  • To comply with social distancing, we are no longer going to offer the use of our limousines and we ask you to use your own transport to the funeral.

For everybody’s safety, the Government have issued guidelines on who can attend services. Attendees are limited to immediate family members only.

The immediate family being:

  • Spouse / Partner
  • Parents / carers
  • Brothers / Sisters
  • Children (and partners)

If the deceased had limited family but close friends then it is reasonable they can attend. In the case of the death of a grandparent, attendance by the grandchildren is appropriate.

It’s necessary for us to ask that anyone from the higher risk groups (Over 70s, pregnant, immunocompromised) should not attend.

I’m due to attend a funeral, should I still go?

The number of people who can attend a funeral is now limited to immediate family only.

If you are attending a funeral, please continue to follow the government advice ensuring you wash your hands regularly and as hard as it may be to do so, avoid close contact with other mourners.

What happens if you have to close, what should I do?

We’ve part of the Scotmid family, and have 16 other offices. Unfortunately, it may not be possible for us to remain open if colleagues are themselves self-isolating or become unwell. If we have to close temporarily, you can contact our team on 01698 263 115.

Are there any restrictions on funerals for someone who has died from coronavirus?

Currently, there are no restrictions that prevent someone who has died from coronavirus having a funeral whether that is for a cremation or a burial. We are following government guidelines closely on this and should the advice change we will provide updates on this page.

Do the crematoriums have facilities for live streaming of funerals?

We work closely with the crematoriums and can let you know if they are able to live stream or record services. This may be beneficial so the service can be shared with wider family and friends, via a private web link.

What if items in my funeral plan are no longer available due to coronavirus?

The situation is changing regularly and if there are any further limitations to the services we can offer, we will work with you and your loved ones to address this.

Keeping you informed

We will continue to keep you updated via our website and our social media accounts.

We will ensure this reflects the best possible information relating to any necessary closures or changes to our services.
